The Passing of Bill Safire The Executive Committee and Governing Board of the Neuroethics Society express their sadness on the passing of William Safire, who died of pancreatic cancer on September 27, 2009. Bill Safire was best known as a Pulitzer Prize-winning political columnist for the New York Times and for his articles and books on language. It is less well known that as Chairman of the Dana Foundation, Bill Safire was a central driving force in the field of Neuroethics. In 2002 the Dana Foundation sponsored a conference entitled Neuroethics: Mapping the Field. Arguably this meeting crystallized the importance of creating a Neuroethics Society. With Bill Safire’s advice and support from the Dana Foundation, this society has come into existence and flourished. We are fortunate to have had Bill Safire as a friend, advisor, and supporter. For more information, please see the Dana Foundation's website.
